About me

My name is Erin Wilson and I am the face (and the feet) behind Barefoot Shoes Australia. I have spent the best part of the last 10 years trying to find a cause and solution to my alignment issues which have resulted in chronic knee pain. When I was just 24 years old, one of the country’s “top doctors” told me that if the boxing exercises I was doing hurt my knees, then I should just stop doing them. And at 34 years old, I paid $300 for a specialist to tell me that I should probably stop running or I will just have to tolerate the pain. Neither of these were acceptable options in my mind.

It wasn’t until I randomly tried on a pair of Altra Running Shoes in my search for comfortable trail runners, that I stumbled upon the answer. I found and amazing Physio and did a WHOLE bunch of research and am now a fully-fledged, super passionate, barefoot enthusiast. Strengthening my feet is a process and I have had incredible results in just one year but it became immediately obvious that barefoot shoes needed to be an ‘everyday thing’, not just a ‘running thing’. The only problem was buying shoes that were already fairly pricy from Europe and then doubling it with postage costs and waiting a month or more to receive them. And so, Barefoot Shoes Australia was born.

Barefoot shoes explained

Shoes that are designed with the natural shape and function of a foot in mind. The key elements that define a barefoot shoe are FLAT, THIN, FLEXIBLE and WIDE. They’ll protect your feet from the elements and the terrain but they’ll feel as much like walking barefoot as possible.

Barefoot shoes vary a lot in shape because, well, feet vary a lot in shape! You want a shoe that fits your foot. You don’t want to make your foot shaped like a shoe. These days, rigid shoes with loads of cushioning, arch support, tapered toe boxes and no ability to feel the ground have become ‘normal’. And along with them, we have bunions, calluses, hammer toes, poor balance, foot pain, improper alignment and loads of other issues!
